Check Your Occupation

Ensure your occupation is on the relevant skilled occupation list for the visa you are targeting.

Skills Assessment

Have your skills assessed by the relevant assessing authority for your nominated occupation. This is a mandatory step.

Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI)

Submit an EOI through the SkillSelect system. You will need to provide your points score based on age, English language ability, work experience, and education.

Receive an Invitation to Apply

The Department of Home Affairs periodically invites candidates with the highest points scores to apply for a visa.

Lodge Your Visa Application

If invited, you have 60 days to lodge your application with all required documents, including health and character checks.

Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189)

This visa is for points-tested skilled workers who are not sponsored by an employer or family member or nominated by a state or territory government.

    You must achieve a minimum score on the points test. Points are awarded for age, English proficiency, skilled employment, and qualifications.

  • No Sponsorship Required

    This visa allows you to live and work permanently anywhere in Australia without needing a sponsor.

  • Highly Competitive

    Invitation rounds are competitive, and only candidates with high points in in-demand occupations are typically invited.

Skilled Nominated Visa (subclass 190)

This visa lets nominated skilled workers live and work in Australia as permanent residents. You must be nominated by an Australian state or territory government.

  • State Nomination

    You must be nominated by a state or territory, which usually requires your occupation to be on their specific skills list.

  • Bonus Points

    A successful nomination gives you 5 extra points towards your total score.

  • Commitment to State

    You are generally expected to live and work in your nominating state for at least two years after the visa is granted.
